"Old Put." General Israel Putnam leads Mantz's Maryland Rifle Company and the 4th Maryland Independent Company forward at the battle of Harlem Heights, September 16, 1776. The officer on the left is Aaron Burr who was Putnam's aide de camp at the time.
"This is start of an oil depicting General Israel Putnam leading Mantz's Maryland Rifle Company and the 4th Maryland Independent Company forward at the Battle of Harlem Heights. At this point the figures are all drawn in with line and the background roughed in. This will be brighter, in some cases I like to work from dark to light. This represents 3 days work ( I started this a month ago ) , with another month to go. I sort of like to do the background first and rough everything in overall then start to bring up the detail. Mantz's company is dressed in yellow and the 4th in purple. Putnam is in a blue coat faced orange based on a description of him. On the left is his aide de camp Aaron Burr. I'm going add more troops in the background but that will be done at the end."
