"Getting ready to start the Major Andre painting. 50x29" canvas has 4 coats of gesso sanded between with extra fine each coat. Will probably give it another 2 to 4 then let it cure for a day. I want to see if I can get the surface as smooth a glass. I gave the gesso a nice warm tint." - Don Troiani, August 8, 2023

"Well, I got the Major Andre painting penciled in after a week or more. With these kind of complicated scenes I try to work out everything before actual painting begins. The building needed a quite a few changes from it's present appearance , mainly removing a front porch that was added in the 19th Century. The Dutch style brick and stonework required a lot of attention. The drawing has a tinted ground (the photo washed it out , it's much stronger than what you see here) added , will be sealed with more gesso and in about 2 days, ready for the fun part." - Don Troiani, August 17, 2023

"Major Andre painting 3 days in from the post below. Background building is roughed in a somewhat but no detailing. Figures outlined with thin paint and ready to start painting. I thought Major Talmadge's legs (far left with helmet) were a bit short so I lengthened them at tad. Even though the length was correct , it didn't look quite right. The blue sky area on the left will have trees and probably more figures . Once the figures are all roughed in then things really slow down as the detailing is time consuming." - Don Troiani, August 20, 2023
"Major Andre is now roughed in after 11 more days from the last post (see posts below for details). Some areas are more worked on than others but nothing is fully complete . I wanted to get everything in and the canvas covered. I tend you jump about quite a bit and work on different parts from day to day. Moving towards the musicians on the right now. After they are roughed in I'll jump back to the left. Still weeks of work ahead. The painting isn't this blue, the phone wouldn't give a color accurate snapshot." - Don Troiani, September 3, 2023
