"I’ll match you against the world" - Battle of Brandywine, Sept 11, 1777
Lt. Colonel Medows (55th Regiment of Foot) leads the British 1st Grenadier Battalion at the Battle of Brandywine. Two battalions of Grenadiers , about 1400 men attack Washington's flank. The scene here depicts the brave grenadier companies of the 37th and 40th Regiments of Foot with massed fifes and drums of the various companies playing the "Grenadier March" . Despite losses the attack was successful. Medows told his men to put on their caps and proclaimed to his men "I’ll match you against the world."- Don Troiani. October 10th, 2026.

ABOVE: "Starting to sketch the under drawing for Brandywine. There are a lot of figures in this. Many models comprise the front rank and it's important that each is an individual character. The most time consuming things are drawing in all the muskets which have to be very precise. Then the drawing will be sealed with clear gesso then a tint . Each figure will be then sketched lightly with burnt umber then the real painting begins. Why do I do it like this, I guess it's because I just do." - Don Troiani, August 5, 2026

ABOVE: "Almost ready to start the big painting (50" wide) of the British Grenadier attack at Brandywine. My most unfavorite part is stretching and priming the canvas. Here I'm using a tinted gesso , this the 4th coat . Now I'm using a wide scraper to wipe it smooth then sand. Probably 2 more coats scraped and sanded followed by a wet sanding ,wiping down and examining for any dings. Let it cure for 24hours and I'm ready to start the drawing on the canvas. For this the canvas has to be almost glass smooth due to the complex detailed drawing." - Don Troiani, August 1, 2026
